Booklover quilt – the Martian

I love audiobooks. I mean really: LOOOVVEEE them! Since I have to read a lot of scientific papers for work, I tend to not read books in my free time. Instead I enjoy listening to audiobooks. I’ve got a couple of audiobooks I keep coming back to – Rick Riordan’s books for instance or Harry Potter and some stand-along books. One of my fav audiobooks is “The Martian” by Andy Weir. I listened to the book back in 2017 on a road trip with my wife through Arizona – and I keep re-listening it a couple of times a year 🤓. It’s one of these books that’s with each listen gets better!

The book begins with astronaut Mark Watney waking up to an alarm going off in his space helmet. Once conscious, he realizes that his entire crew has evacuated because of a sandstorm. During the evacuation Mark Watney was hit by an antenna and knocked unconscious. As he woke up, he’s alone on Mars. He’s left with the hub, all kinds of materials for the interrupted mission, 2 Mars rovers and solar cells. And Mark. Stranded on Mars. And everyone thinks he’s dead. Except he’s not. Oh, and I forgot to tell you – Mark Watney is a botanist. Yes, you read right: botanist 🌱.

I’m not gonna give a way more. If you love space adventures, you’ll love The Martian. I guarantee you won’t be able to put the book down or stop listening to the audiobook once you’ve started.

Since I cannot display my audiobooks on shelves, I thought I’d honor them with a quilt. I’ve chosen the #booknerd Quiltblock by Angela Pingel. It’s a a fairly simple paper piecing pattern and a lot of fun to sew. I’ve added two triangles on the back to insert a wooden bolt to hang the quilt.

“I never realized how utterly silent Mars is. It’s a desert world with practically no atmosphere to convey sound. I could hear my own heartbeat.” -Mark Watney, The Martian by Andy Weir

I’m not decided yet if I should create a full booknerd quilt or just continue with single blocks. What do you think? huge book blanket or cute quilt decoration books?

“If a hiker gets lost in the mountains, people will coordinate a search. If a train crashes, people will line up to give blood. If an earthquake levels a city, people all over the world will send emergency supplies. This is so fundamentally human that it’s found in every culture without exception. Yes, there are assholes who just don’t care, but they’re massively outnumbered by the people who do.” -Mark Watney, The Martian by Andy Weir
